Review 2024
2024 saw me celebrate my 60th birthday in April. Ruby celebrated her 56th year.
In 2024 we attended 19 events with Ruby - rallies, road-runs and vintage festivals.
We clocked-up 2,533 miles and used 181 gallons of diesel fuel.
Below are a series of photos from our year.
Cost of operations in 2024:
Storage £1,742
Fuel £1,219
Maintenance £854
Restoration £594
Insurance £393
Total: £4,802
I bought and fitted 26 Wilmot Breeden handles and 28 oval plastic seat numbers. These re-create the original look of the seat backs. These items were removed when Ruby was downgraded to local bus work in 1979.
Ruby meets-up with DAX 610C - a Red & White Bristol MW/ECW bus and a host of other Bristol/ECW PSVs at this annual Bristol chassis enthusiasts event.
A view of Ruby's gearbox taken from inside the maintenance pit, after the gearbox oil and oil filter had been changed.
Always a pleasure to be at Brooklands, which is a superb location, packed with interesting buildings & vehicles relating to the early years of British motor sport.
A rare picture of me driving Ruby.
For Associated Motorways, Red & White operated from Monmouth to Nottingham. I like to take Ruby to this rally near Loughborough.
Ruby sits beside a Bristol 'Lodekka' from the Lincolnshire fleet.
Probably the last of such events organised and hosted by Lady McAlpine (who is now 80-years) at her home near Henley.
A Dennis Lancet squeezes between a selection of Bristol / ECW coaches.
No buses or coaches! Just girls doing the cancan. No I wasn't on drugs, this was for real.
This is a superb vintage weekend and the Saturday night entertainment is always top-notch.
Always great to be back in Barry at this excellent rally.
I was fortunate to be invited to drive NHB 190M, a Merthyr Tydfil Bristol RESL / ECW bus for the morning. At the end of the day I got Ruby & 190 together.
My grandparents ran the Anchor Hotel, (opposite Tintern Abbey) from 1920 to 1953. Father was born there in 1925. So, I like an annual pilgrimage to enjoy a meal and indulge in some family nostalgia.
Starting in Oxford we ran via Swindon and Salisbury to Christchurch. Day two was a south coast adventure via Southampton to the brilliant Amberley Museum, where this fabulous line-up of participating coaches was taken in the quarry yard.
Another great little steam and country rally in Oxfordshire. Only a few historic commercial vehicles attend. A regular is this Green Line AEC Routemaster coach, RMC1497.
Here Ruby sits between two bus types Red & White operated back in the day. A Bristol RELL and a Leyland Titan PD1.
This July was 90-years since Associated Motorways was formed; 50-years since all services were branded NATIONAL; 40-years since the last mass departure from Cheltenham Coach Station. To celebrate these anniversaries I organised coach festival at Cheltenham Town Football Club.
Cheltenham District was once owned by Red & White.
A nice picture of Ruby, with her ususal display signage at Brislington Park & Ride site.
Always a fabulous rally, with large displays of steam traction engines, lorries, tractors, motorbikes, cars and of course classic buses and coaches.
When I worked in the North-East, these UNITED Olympians ran the 723 route from Darlington to Newcastle.
We like a wide variety of music. At this festival it's possible to indulge in live music from the 1940’s through to the 1970’s. Many of the bands here are brilliant and the wide selection of vintage stalls makes it a retail paradise. Ruby seen through the windshield of a 1950's Cadillac.
A family-run classic bus and coach event which always has an interesting selection of vehicles.
Here Ruby is parked beside a 1960 AEC Reliance bus from the City of Oxford fleet.
A most enoyable day, with a great selection of vehicles! Ruby was parked between a Bristol LS and Bristol MW - chassis types Red & White had in their coach fleet in the 1950's & 1960's.
It's great to have SHOWBUS back. Unfortunately, torrential ran during the days leading up to the show, meant that the main display field was unusable on the day. Hence, I parked Ruby on hard-standing beside this Second World War hanger.
A different red & white - a couple of AEC Routemasters & a white Rolls Royce. Mr Rolls came from Monmouth in Red & White country.
During 2024 I've been driving these Routemasters on wedding hires. My last trip was in this beautiful coach RMC1462 – which cruises along nicely at 55mph!
Ruby on film location (a mock 1960's Coach Station), awaiting her moment of fame, May 2024.
